Jets GM Joe Douglas: Elijah Moore ‘was always going to’ stay with team
New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas has indicated that sending wide receiver Elijah Moore to a different team wasn’t on the table.
“We had some calls,” Douglas said about Moore while speaking with reporters after Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, per the Jets’ website. “But at the end of the day like (head coach Robert Saleh) said, Elijah was always going to be a New York Jet.”
Moore requested a trade last month amid his frustrations over his role in the offense and his lack of targets throughout the season. Saleh kept Moore out of the lineup for what became the Week 7 win at the Denver Broncos, and the 22-year-old then recorded zero receptions on one official target in this past Sunday’s 22-17 loss to the New England Patriots that dropped the Jets to 5-3 on the campaign.
“I don’t even know,” Moore remarked after that defeat, according to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. “I couldn’t even tell you. I don’t get the ball. I don’t know.”
Meanwhile, Douglas insisted Tuesday that the Jets still “love” the second-round selection from the 2021 NFL Draft.
“We all stood on the table to take him high in the second round last year,” Douglas continued. “We think the world of him. Obviously, we’re a football family. Anytime there’s an issue, we like to handle that in-house. I was able to have a really good one-on-one conversation with Elijah. Again, we think the world of him. We think he has a bright future as a New York Jet.”
Thus far this season, Moore has tallied 16 catches on 30 targets for 203 yards and no touchdowns.
The Jets host the 6-1 Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
