HC Robert Saleh: Jets must ‘find more opportunities’ for WR Elijah Moore
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh understands wide receiver Elijah Moore must be more involved in the offense moving forward.
“We’ll find a way to make sure that balances out the way we want it to,” Saleh explained Wednesday about Moore’s targets compared to the number of passes thrown to other talents, as mentioned by Phillip Martinez of SNY. “With Corey [Davis] being down, getting [Denzel] Mims out there keeping a bigger body out in that Z, and Garrett [Wilson] is playing at such a high level right now. We have to make sure we find more opportunities for Elijah.”
Moore’s name has repeatedly been in headlines since he took to Twitter to complain about a lack of targets in October and then requested a trade. Saleh later insisted the 22-year-old wasn’t going anywhere, and general manager Joe Douglas repeated that take after Moore remained attached to the franchise through and beyond Tuesday’s trade deadline.
However, the numbers show why the 2021 second-round draft selection has been frustrated as of late. Moore recorded 43 catches for 538 yards and five touchdowns across 11 games as a rookie but thus far has tallied 16 receptions on 30 targets for 203 yards and no scores in seven contests and six starts this season.
“I don’t even know,” Moore said about a perceived lack of chemistry with quarterback Zach Wilson after he was officially targeted just once in this past Sunday’s 22-17 loss to the New England Patriots, per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. “I couldn’t even tell you. I don’t get the ball. I don’t know.”
According to unofficial splits shared by The Post’s Brian Costello, the Wilson-Moore connection has gone 23-of-52 (44.2%) for 266 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. That duo will look to improve such figures when the 5-3 Jets host the 6-1 Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
