Top 11 Undergraduate Journalism Programs

You’ve graduated high school and your ready to choose a college. You’ve come to realize that journalism is where you see yourself but you can’t decide on which colleges to apply. There are so many choices and you’re not sure which program offers the type of education you would find most beneficial.

Rankings for pre-medical and pre-law schools are incredibly common, but for some reason it’s difficult to come upon a definitive list of accredited and acclaimed journalism schools. That’s not to say that the information isn’t readily available, it just takes some investigating.

To make things a little bit easier, I’ve put together a list of the most progressive and immersive undergraduate journalism programs in the country. This list of programs comprises the best in the nation due to their respected faculty, job placement and notoriety.

While some of the schools on this list may stand out due to their celebrity, there are a number of schools that haven’t received that attention they deserve and are definitely worth a look. You don’t need to go to an Ivy League school to get a respected education. With reporting, I find the programs that are immersive to be the most impressive. And while there are some Ivy League schools that have made the list, they haven’t done so because of their name. Their programs are intense and inspiring with connected faculty and intense programs that leave their students in the best possible position when searching for a job post graduation.

While I’m sure you’ve received plenty of advice from friends and family who might advise you against pursuing a career or education in journalism, I’m here to tell you that this industry is definitely worth your time. While it’s true that the industry is changing, that just means that there are exciting new avenues to pursue investigative and meaningful reporting. While print once ruled the roost, digital media is now at the forefront of the industry with many people turning to interactive interfaces and video for their news.

The programs listed below have all embraced this new era of journalism, many offering classes in interactive disciplines, social media and video storytelling for the web. A reporter now must be well versed in these different mediums and these schools will prepare you for a successful career.
